What to expect from your first guitar lesson in St Neots

Starting guitar lessons can feel exciting, but it can also feel a bit intimidating if you’ve never played before.

You might be wondering what happens in the first lesson, whether you need your own guitar, whether you’ll be expected to know anything already, or whether you’ll feel awkward if you’re a complete beginner.

The answer is simple: you don’t need to know anything before you start.

My guitar lessons in St Neots are designed to feel relaxed, practical and beginner-friendly from the first session. I teach from Peppercorns Academy and the aim of the first lesson is to help you feel comfortable with the guitar, understand the basics and leave wanting to play more.

Do You Need to Bring Your Own Guitar?

You can bring your own guitar if you have one, but you don’t have to.

There are guitars available to use at Peppercorns Academy, so you can still book a free trial guitar lesson even if you haven’t bought an instrument yet. This is useful for beginners and parents who want to see whether guitar lessons are the right fit before spending money on gear.

If you do have your own guitar, bring it with you. It helps to learn on the instrument you’ll be practising with at home.

What Happens When You Arrive?

For your first lesson, you’ll come to Peppercorns Academy in St Neots and meet me there.

We’ll talk about what kind of music you like, what made you want to learn guitar and whether there are any songs or bands you’re interested in. If you’re a young player, a parent can stay during the lesson. Some parents prefer to sit in, especially for the first session, and that’s completely fine.

If you’re an adult beginner, the same applies: there’s no pressure and no judgement. You can start from scratch.

What If You’ve Never Played Guitar Before?

That’s absolutely fine.

If you’ve never picked up a guitar before, we’ll start with the real basics. That might include:

  • How to hold the guitar
  • How to sit comfortably
  • Where your hands go
  • The names of the strings
  • How to press down on the strings
  • How to play a simple riff
  • How to start moving between notes or chords

If you’re left-handed, we can also look at how your position may need to change.

You don’t need to arrive knowing chords, tabs, theory or technique. That’s what the lesson is for.

Will You Learn a Song Straight Away?

That depends on the student, but I like to get people playing as soon as possible.

For many beginners, a simple riff is a brilliant place to start. Riffs are short, memorable and satisfying. They help you feel like you’re actually playing guitar, even early on.

A good beginner riff can help with timing, confidence, finger movement and rhythm. It also gives you something to show people when you get home, which is part of the fun.

How I Help Nervous Beginners Relax

Lots of people feel nervous before their first guitar lesson. Young players can worry they’ll get it wrong. Adult beginners sometimes worry they’ve left it too late. Some students feel unsure because they’ve struggled with learning in other settings.

My approach is calm and reassuring.

If you’re worried about something, we’ll slow it down. If something feels difficult, we’ll break it into smaller steps. If your fingers don’t do what your brain is asking them to do yet, that’s normal.

Guitar takes time. Everyone starts somewhere.

There’s no time limit for getting good.

What Parents Should Know Before Booking

Parents are welcome to stay during lessons for younger students. You can sit in, watch, listen and see how your child gets on.

Peppercorns Academy is a friendly music space in St Neots, with parking outside and seating inside. It’s a good setting for young players because they’re surrounded by music, instruments and creative people.

For children who are nervous, low in confidence or learn differently, guitar can be a brilliant thing to try. It gives them something practical to focus on, something they can enjoy, and something they can improve at step by step.

Parents often notice confidence first. A student might start wanting to show what they’ve learned, play a riff at home or talk more about music. Those small moments matter.

What Will You Feel After the First Lesson?

My goal is for you to leave your first lesson feeling inspired to pick up the guitar again.

Not stressed. Not overloaded. Not thinking you have to become perfect overnight.

Just excited to play.

That’s the best starting point for learning guitar. If you enjoy it, you’ll practise more. If you practise more, you’ll improve. And once you start improving, guitar becomes even more fun.
